We are Under Attack and the Terrorists Are White Men With Guns

October 4th, 2017

While Trump bans Muslims and attacks people of color, a dark shadow emerges. While Trump scorns the peaceful protests of NFL players, calling them sons of bitches, a plot unfolds. While Mexican-Americans feed the nation, and 800,000 fully vetted Dreamers go to work and go to school, Trump calls them rapists and murderers and Congress calls for their deportation. All the while, plans for mayhem and murder proceed.

While Trump acts like a madman, we are under attack.

Over the last five years, there has been a mass shooting every day somewhere in America. That’s 1400 straight days since Sandy Hook. And the terrorists?  White males with high-powered rifles. And they are being supported by members of Congress and the NRA, a terrorist organization that is currently second only to ISIS in enabling this carnage against innocent men, women, and children. And here’s an even more sobering thought: the bulk of the NRA’s funding isn’t coming from gun manufacturers. It’s coming from gun owners.

And while the GOP Congress passes bills that allow mentally ill to own guns, the NRA continues its propaganda campaign of lies and distortions. “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” Well, that’s close. More to the point might be “White people kill people.”

Since 2001, more Americans have been killed by white Americans than Muslims, blacks, Latinos or any other group combined. And their preferred weapons are the hundreds of millions of firearms that freely exchange hands at undocumented gun shows, through private sales from advertisements in newsletters and other media, and via legitimate sales in gun stores. And although Democrats took a knee this week to protest the GOP’s resistance to basic background checks, I have to ask: where was that knee last week? Why does it take 500 people to be shot to get your attention?

Even after two of their own were shot by a mentally ill gunman, nothing.

Here’s the sad reality: White men with guns are threatening America. And our only defensive weapons are reason and hope.

I don’t like our chances.
