Fake News Awards Means Legal Trouble, Except For Trump

Chip Franklin

Again, without any thought of it’s appropriateness, legality, or basic decency, Trump’s announcement that he would hold “FAKE NEWS AWARDS” imperils Federal employees. In November Trump tweeted,

“We should have a contest as to which of the Networks, plus CNN and not including Fox, is the most dishonest, corrupt and/or distorted in its political coverage of your favorite President (me). They are all bad. Winner to receive the FAKE NEWS TROPHY!”

Childish, of course, but also puts White House staff at risk. Norm Eisen, President Barack Obama’s former ethics czar, tweeted this last week;

“WARNING to White House staff: the president may be exempt from the rules at 5 CFR § 2635.701 et seq. on misuse of position BUT YOU ARE NOT. If you help @potus with the below, you risk violating §§ 702, 704 & 705 forbidding use of gov time & $$$ to harm some media & aid others.”

No surprise that Trump would do this to those who have supported him thru this nightmare of a first year in office. But it also damages the 4th estate, those journalists who unflinchingly remain non-partisan and search for facts. Facts that we used to embrace, even cherish. But there is a truth that Trump can’t deny. These friends are beginning to turn. His support is beginning to fade. Even FOX news is showing cracks, allowing both Chris Wallace and Shepard Smith to challenge his ignorant blather.

This will end. But till then, the only shit-hole I know of is two inches below Trump’s  nose.
