We are not an incredibly sophisticated country. By that I mean we live in the literal, where nuance goes to die. Where Americans deny the existence of time because the hands of a clock move with a grace and subtlety that escapes their lazy gaze. Where a Donald Trump can wrap his vitriolic hate in a flag and defeat a far superior person. It’s not just a worrisome trend; social media is nurturing the ignorance, the fear, the hate and creating a new reality.
In this upside-down world, where Nazis can speak openly and 14 yr old children are sexual objects for middle-aged men, we face a challenge. We need to demonstrate a moral superiority. We need to be stronger. We need leaders. Instead, we are weak, and have fallen to the level of those we revile. The racist Breitbart and his minions are watching and waiting to drag us down, and we have made their work easy.
And by “we” I mean men.
From Bill Clinton to Al Franken, we have talked, but not walked the values we pretend to hold dear. We have given creeps like Limbaugh, Gingrich, and now Roy Moore the opportunity to equate their moral shortcomings with ours. And for the record, I don’t think what Franken did is as bad as Moore’s alleged molestation, but I’m not the vote we need. When voters in Alabama go the polls in three weeks, they’ll see Franken’s behavior and look at Roy Moore, and NOT see the difference. And Moore will win.
Maybe it’s time to fill the halls of Congress with women. They’re not perfect, but they are considerably better equipped to treat people more fairly and honorably. But we will never allow them to hold power, cause who would we then harass?
