Not So Free

Chip Franklin

Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook CEO still hip-deep in controversy regarding his decision to allow political ads, is now doubling down, saying his embattled company will stand for “free expression.” He claims his hands are tied under existing constitutional limitations. No Mark, you’re wrong.

The 1st amendment was Madison’s belief that criticism of the government should not be infringed, it should in fact be encouraged. Madison’s intent was to put limitations on the government, not businesses or individuals. The 1st amendment does not imply that Eminem can drop the F-Bomb at the Grammy’s or conversely, Facebook must allow stories of pedofile pizza parlors. That is the other side of free expression; you still have the freedom to say no.

Mark Zuckerbeg is using his platform to make billions of dollars, while allowing Russians and Americans who act like Russians attack our Democratic institutions. You could say no, Mark. You could require that blatantly false claims and memes be struck from your platform. You could, instead of wrapping yourself in a hundred-dollar bill, protect the integrity of the voting process, and in the process stand for free and honest expression. But instead, you are acting in your own interests instead in that of our Democratic principles.

The 1st amendment doesn’t say Facebook must allow stories of pedofile pizza parlors or slurred Pelosi vidseo, you greedy prick. No more than Twitter has to let me call you a greedy prick. But it does, so I do.
