Thoughts and Prayers, Guns and Bullets

Chip Franklin

First of all, nothing will happen.

Another school shooting, more dead children. Congress sends their thoughts and prayers, guns and bullets, death and carnage, to Americans, wrapped neatly inside the empty rhetoric of the Second Amendment, all while whored to the huge pockets of the National Rifle Association. And there will be no new legislation to curb gun ownership, just like after, Sandy Hook, Las Vegas, and now this Florida High School where 17 young people were slaughtered. Slaughtered not not by ISIS, Al Qaeda, or Raping Mexicans. No, they were killed by a young, white man.  A terrorist, aided by our US Congress.

It’s at least the fourth school shooting this year, and this latest shooting and is among the top 10 deadliest shootings in modern US history. And It happened in a place voted the safest city in Florida.

You will hear gun supporters talk about mental health, even after this president supported allowing people with mental health issues to own firearms. You will hear talk of arming teachers, right to carry, and the occasional anecdote of someone using a firearm to defend themselves. But that’s all bullshit.

The United States Congress is a joke. They don’t care about guns; it’s about money. They’re just cowards standing in the NRA’s dark shadow. Courage, common sense, empathy are all attributes of civic minded groups who fight for our children’s lives. Congress has none of these qualities. We can change laws and push forward to stop these shootings. We can do it now.

But we won’t.

Instead, we offer thoughts and prayers. Neither of which can stop a bullet.
