We Are Under Attack

Chip Franklin

When this president speaks to the racial divide he helped create, he does so in a way that both fascinates and nauseates.
On the anniversary of the 2017 riot in Charlottesville that killed a young 32 yr old woman, Trump is still equivocating when it comes to the white, alt-rite monsters who look to him for support. When Trump says he hates “all kinds of racism,” some may at first think he’s condemning the actions of the white men dressed in Nazi garb, one of whom drove a car into the crowd in Charlottesville last year. But no, it’s obvious he is saying that those who were protesting the white supremicists were racists as well.
Trump’s support of Bannon, Beitbart, Alex Jones, David Duke and the Klan is a dramatic departure from the supposed racial progress Americans thought we had made over the last half century. Instead, Trump has allowed, no encouraged this evil to again surface and terrorize people of color, people of faith, and those who oppose this cancer of a president.
The midterm elections in 2018 will be a first step, but it’s only a step. The question will be; can Americans who support racial and economic equality show up in numbers as to change the racist current that that only seems to be gaining momentum?
And speaking of steps, remember that when NFL players kneel this fall, they are doing so not to disrespect songs or flags, but to remind you that it’s not all right. We have a chief executive who is a racist, misogynistic, sociopath who eggs on very dangerous people to attack our nation’s most vulnerable. He’s called on police to batter the innocent, supporters to attack protesters, the NRA to attack Hillary, and now calls on journalists to be silenced.
This is not a test. There are no coded messages, no secret missives. It’s all in the open for everyone to see. America is under attack. And the enemy is our president.
