The Real Hoax

February 29th, 2020

President Trump, speaking before an enthusiastic crowd in South Carolina, called the Democrat’s response to the Coronavirus the “new hoax.”

First, that there are still “enthusiastic” supporters for a man who has uttered over 16,000 lies in three and a half years is depressing, to say the least. I’m not talking about misstatements or obfuscations, but an earnest effort to deceive. He has lied repeatedly about his relationships with oligarchs, his finances, and matters of national security. But that seems to matter little to senior Republican enablers or his base. So, yeah, “enthusiastic” supporters of this sociopath are a source of my dismay.

But what part the Democrats response is “hoax-like?” The part where Dr. Nancy Messonnier, head of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases spoke to the unknown nature of coronaviruses and its inevitable spread? She has been called a conspirator because her brother is Rod Rosenstein, the former deputy Attorney General. Limbaugh, Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, Russian bots and other right-wing lunatics have repeatedly labeled her part of the deep-state conspiracy, and now Trump echoes their insane missives.

400 years ago, when Galileo turned his telescope to the heavens and exclaimed that the stars were suns like ours, the Pope threatened death should he not renounce his heresy. He did so, and remained under house arrest until his death.

But the stars continued to shine.

There is no hoax. It’s science. And science has been under attack for centuries by populist leaders such as Trump, who deny the existence of germs simply because, to the naked, uneducated eye, they cannot be seen. But like the slow-moving hands of a clock, inching forward without prejudice or deliberation, time will again prove that science, regardless of your beliefs, always prevails.

But when encumbered by the ignorant, populistic rhetoric of our times, at what cost?
