The Stuff

The role of President has many facets. There’s the constitutional duties, of which Trump has either violated or neglected to such a degree that some fear the office has been irreparably harmed. Then there’s the more nuanced role of statesman and diplomat of which Trump wasn’t neglectful. He’s simply incapable.

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson had different visions of the President’s power, but both agreed that whomever occupied the office possess the power of subtlety. And it is somewhat ironic that this skill be of most importance during a nation’s most difficult moments, when all around are panicked and searching for both solutions and scapegoats.

That time would be now.

Donald Trump’s tenure needs to end, and it is most important that his replacement posses the qualities which give people confidence that whatever decisions are made, they are the product of thoughtful and disciplined minds. In other words, from an experienced leader who has been through difficulties and understands that cheering crowds do not always mean you are right.

Bernie Sanders has some interesting ideas, but Joe Biden has the stuff.
